About Me

Hello! I’m Alex Smith, a passionate Unity Developer with over 7 years of experience. Welcome to my About Me page, where you’ll get a little insight into my journey and the things that drive me.

My love for game development began with modding the original Halo CE on PC. That was when I got my first taste of the exciting world of game creation, from 3D modeling to textures and game engines. I've had a hand in multiple disciplines in the gaming industry, learning the basics of 3D modeling with Blender and 3DS Max and dabbling in digital art with GIMP and Photoshop.

However, the turning point was realizing that to truly make a complete game I needed to understand programming. I took it upon myself to learn Java through a college-level textbook, and that sparked my fascination with the limitless possibilities that programming offers. From there, I discovered Unity and started learning C#, diving headfirst into the world of game development.

For years, I built an array of small projects and prototypes in Unity, continuously expanding my knowledge. This learning process continued as I navigated through college and started doing freelance programming jobs. By the end of my college years, I had achieved a high level of proficiency in both game development and programming.

My journey then led me to work as a programming consultant for one of the capstone teams at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA). It was an incredible experience, collaborating with a team full of passionate individuals, and contributing to a project that we all cared about. This hands-on experience gave me a taste of what it’s like to be part of a game development team, and it’s a feeling I cherish to this day.

Recently I took on the role of a Data Engineer at Walmart. This position was a departure from my usual .NET and C# related programming work, and from game development, but it provided great insight into the operations of a large company. Working within a professional team environment, engaging in daily stand-ups, and consistently using Git and JIRA, all contributed to a rich and valuable experience.

But my heart remains with game development, and that's why I’m now eager and excited to fully pursue my dream in this field.

On a personal note, I am deeply fond of indie pop and indie rock, and often find myself unwinding on my piano, exploring melodies that resonate with me. I have ambitions of one day being skilled enough to produce my own music - another form of creative expression that I greatly appreciate.

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoy exploring the rest of my portfolio, where you can see the projects I’ve worked on and what I can bring to the table as a Unity Developer.
